A letter written to the people of Great Harvest from a relative of the the man who owned the building over 100 years ago
Dear Cast and Crew of Great Harvest Bread Company,
My husbands grandfather's family occupied where you are for almost 100 years. It was Draheim and Pingles, a bar in the late 1800's and 1900's and was known for its chili. Those offices upstairs is where my father-in-law grew up. The property 116 W. Wisconsin Ave. stayed in the family for many years. My husband's grandfather wanted to run for state senator (Winnebago County) and had to not own a speak easy. It was transformed to Draheim Sporting Goods, which stayed in business for many years. There is a dumb waiter blocked in the wall right when you walk in. That's where the chili came down from the kitchen from the apartment upstairs. I think there's a small company in the apartment where my father-in-law grew up in.
If you have any other questions please feel free to write or call me. I'm sure my father-in-law can come up with an answer, if not, his sister. Sadly a sister who also grew up in the apartment passed away in July.
